Eco-Safe Driving

ECO Safe Driving is a regonised and proven style of driving that contributes to road safety whilst reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Control

Using your vehicle controls as smoothly as possible can reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and will help in reducing your Co2. Use your accelerator smoothly and progressively and when appropriate take your foot off the accelerator and allow the momentum of the vehicle to take you forward. Try to avoid excessive revving when starting your engine and when moving away.

It is not always necessary to change up or down through each gear, try skipping gears. As soon as conditions allow use the highest possible gear without making the engine struggle. Ensure that your speed is appropriate to the road, traffic and weather conditions and consider how inappropriate speed can affect your fuel consumption and emissions.

Planning

You can use your observational skills and identify hazards early, this will allow you adequate time to react resulting in braking and acceleration that is smooth and progressive. You can use engine braking where possible and with your foot fully off the accelerator the engine needs little if any fuel. If you are likely to be at a standstill for a while, simply switch off your engine as your engine is idling so you are wasting fuel and adding to your Co2 emissions.

Tips For Eco-Safe Driving

  • Check your tyre pressures regularly and keep them at the recommended pressure
  • Do not carry unnecessary weight in your car boot
  • Remove roof-racks and luggage boxes when not needed to reduce air resistance
  • Do not exceed speed limits and always accelerate gently
  • Consider using Cruise Control where it would be appropriate
  • Turn off your engine if you are likely to have a prolonged wait
  • Use Air Conditioning only when you need to
  • Plan your route to avoid known congestion points and try to travel during off-peak times

Eco-Safe driving is a recognised and proven style of driving that contributes to road safety whilst reducing fuel consumption and emissions, making these changes could reduce your fuel bill.

Driving Your Car

  • Travelling at a constant 37 mph in fifth gear uses 25% less fuel than travelling in third gear.
  • Driving at an appropriate speed to the road conditions can give you time to anticipate traffic ahead helping you to drive more smoothly
  • Check the road ahead and slow down early giving the traffic time to start moving again before you reach them and then increase your speed without the need to stop
  • Change gears at the right moment remember if your car is struggling change gears
  • If your stopped in traffic for more than 3 minutes switch off your engine, idling engines wastes fuel
  • Use your air con and any electrical devices to a minimum these increase your fuel consumption
  • Modern engines are designed to be most efficient when you get in and go
  • Revving your engine increases emissions and engine wear
