The driving test is designed for you to show your practical skills, the understanding of the Highway Code and the theory of driving safely.
|
|
|
|
On the day of your Practical Driving Test you will need to bring with you:
- your theory test pass certificate
- both parts of your photo card licence
These items will be checked by the examiner before you begin your driving test and if you fail to bring these items with you your test may not go ahead and you may lose your test fee. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving.

The examiner will ask you to read the number plate on a parked vehicle to test your eyesight and you must be able to read a number plate from a distance of:
- 20 metres for vehicles displaying the new style number plate
- 20.5 metres for vehicles displaying the old style number plates
If you can’t read the number plate correctly your driving test will not continue.

After the eyesight test you will then be asked two safety questions [show me tell me], one show me question that involves you showing the examiner how you would carry out a vehicle check and one tell me question where you will have to explain to the examiner how you would carry out the check. Giving a wrong answer to one or both of the questions will result in one driving fault.

The driving part of your driving test will last about 40 minutes and the examiner will give you directions which you should follow. The test will involve various road and traffic conditions and if you drive the way that learnwithbill has taught you will have no problems. You maybe asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise and you will be asked to complete one exercise to show how well you can reverse your vehicle. The examiner may ask you to:
If you make a mistake, don’t worry about it as it might be a less serious fault and might not affect your result. However if the examiner considers your driving to be dangerous to other road users they will stop your driving test. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass your driving test but if you make 16 driving faults or more you will not pass your test. If you make one serious or dangerous fault you won’t pass your test. There are three types of faults that can be marked:
dangerous fault that involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property
serious fault that could potentially be dangerous
driving fault that is potentially dangerous and if you continue to make the same fault can become a serious fault
If you pass your driving test the examiner will give you a pass certificate and you don’t have to wait for your full licence to arrive you can start driving straight away. Watch the practical test video Here.

During your test you will have to drive independently by following:
traffic signs
a series of directions
a combination of both
In order to help you understand where you are going when following verbal directions the examiner will show you a diagram. If you go off route it won’t affect the result unless you commit a driving fault and the examiner will help you to get back on the route. The examiner will give you directions if the signs are obscured until you can see the next set of signs. Watch the independent video Here.
